But wait - how many T-shirts for a quilt are necessary? This is a question we get asked all the time. And the answer isn't one size fits all - it depends on the size of your t-shirts, how large you want your quilt to be, and a few other factors. Don't worry though - we're here to guide you through this process so you can get a stunning quilt you're proud to show off anytime you have guests.

In this blog post, we will answer the question - how many t-shirts do you need for a quilt? We'll also talk about the factors that affect how many t-shirts you need, and show you how easy it is to transform your t-shirts into a quilt using Project Repat. Let's dive right into the matter at hand:

Factors Affecting How Many T-shirts You Need For A Quilt

In addition to the size of your shirts and how large you want your quilt to be, there are a few other factors that can affect how many t-shirts for a t-shirts quilt you need. These include:

  • The thickness of your batting: If you want a thicker quilt with more loft, then you'll need more batting between your layers of fabric. This means you'll also need more t-shirts to make up for the extra bulk. On the other hand, if you want a thinner quilt, then you can get away with using less batting and fewer t-shirts overall.
  • The type of quilt you want: The number of t-shirts you need will also depend on the type of quilt you're making. For example, if you want a patchwork quilt made entirely from t-shirt fabric, then you'll need more t-shirts since you'll be cutting them into smaller pieces. On the other hand, if you just want a simple tied quilt made from larger squares of fabric, then you won't need as many shirts.
  • The size of your blocks: The size of your blocks (or squares) will also affect how many t-shirts you need. If you want large blocks, then you won't need as many t-shirts since each one will cover more area. However, if you want smaller blocks, then you'll need more t-shirts overall to make up for the smaller size.

With all this said, let's address the question at hand: how many t-shirts for a t-shirt quilt?

How Many T-shirts For A Quilt are Necessary?

So, how many t-shirts for a quilt are necessary? As you now know, it depends...

There is no one answer to this question since the number of t-shirts you'll need ultimately depends on the size of your shirts and how large you want your quilt to be. For example, if you're using standard-sized adult t-shirts and you want a quilt that's around 60 inches by 80 inches, then you'll need approximately 36 t-shirts total.

However, if you're using larger-sized shirts or you want a bigger quilt, then you'll obviously need more t-shirts. And on the flip side, if you're using smaller-sized shirts or wanting a smaller quilt, then you'll need fewer t-shirts. In general, we recommend using between 15-40 t-shirts for a quilt, but ultimately it's up to you and what look you're going for. If you want a denser quilt with less negative space, then you'll obviously need more t-shirts. We can make a lap-size quilt with as few as 8-shirts. However, we recommend 15 t-shirts for a full-size quilt.

And finally, keep in mind that the number of t-shirts you'll need also depends on how much of each shirt you want to include in the quilt. For example, if there's a particular design or image on your shirt that you really want to showcase, then you'll need more shirts overall since you'll be cutting them into smaller pieces. On the other hand, if you're okay with including large swaths of negative space in your quilt, then you'll need fewer shirts overall. It really just depends on the look you're going for and how many t-shirts you have available. To keep things simple, here's a breakdown of the different shirt quantities and the size quilts we can make from them:

  • 6 sides for a Lap Size T Shirt Quilt
  • 24 Sides for a Twin Size T Shirt Quilt
  • 30 sides for a Full size T Shirt Quilt
  • 36 sides for a Large Throw T Shirt Quilt
  • 42 Sides for a Queen Size T Shirt Quilt

Wait - What are "Sides"?

We only need the designated number of sides of shirts (front or back), not full t-shirts. For example, a Full size blanket can be made with 15 full t-shirts using the fronts and backs, or 30 shirts just using one side or any combination in between. Keep in mind - we don't want you to send extra shirts to us, as we won't be able to send them back your way. So, be sure you're factoring in the sides necessary for your intended t-shirt quilt size.

Now, with all that said, let's get into how to get your t-shirts made into a quilt here at Project Repat.
